Red road indigenous health services

Indigenous HEALTH SERVICES

Red Road Indigenous Health Services is an Indigenous led, community-based health program developed in response to the addictions and mental health crisis affecting our Indigenous communities.

The program began when Elders approached The Red Road Healing Society and asked for support in addressing the opioid crisis, substance related harms, and the growing housing crisis. The Red Road Healing Society is inclusive of all peoples and all Nations. All our relatives are welcome.

Our work is grounded in relationship, responsibility, and accountability to community. We understand healing as connection to The Great Mystery, to self, to others, to community, and to spirit. When addressing addiction and mental health, our Elders have taught that we must Bring the Best of Both Worlds Together, this includes Indigenous knowledge and Western medical practices. Red Road Indigenous Health Services supports Indigenous ceremonies and practices alongside evidence based Western treatments. People of all Nations, belief systems, and their practices are respected.

Our services respond to the realities faced by individuals living with addiction, mental health challenges, and homelessness. We recognize that untreated substance use and mental health concerns are among the most common pathways into homelessness. Our approach supports individuals to stabilize their health, improve daily functioning, and reconnect with housing, culture, family, and community supports.

WHO WE SERVE

Red Road Indigenous Health Services provides outpatient care to Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals experiencing substance use and mental health concerns, particularly those who are unhoused or at risk of homelessness. Community Based and Outreach care

In addition to clinic based services, Red Road Indigenous Health Services provides regular outreach to transitional housing programs in the community. On a bi weekly basis, physicians and members of the medical team attend these homes to deliver care where people are living. Many individuals have faced ongoing barriers when trying to access mainstream medical services, including walk in clinics, hospitals, and physician offices. Providing care within housing settings reduces these barriers, supports engagement, and improves continuity of care.

When requested, the team also delivers onsite medical services within First Nations communities located within a 100-kilometre radius of Edmonton.

Walk in services are available through our Northeast Edmonton clinic, alongside virtual care and onsite visits within transitional housing programs and First Nations communities.

our team

Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and social workers. This team based approach allows us to address mental health, substance use, daily functioning, and social stability in an integrated way. Collaboration across disciplines supports consistent and coordinated care.

no fees or charges

Red Road Indigenous Health Services is a charitable organization. There are no fees for patients, housing facilities or First nations communities. No individual is ever charged for care.

connection to housing and community

Our work combines addictions, mental health, housing and community-based supports. By addressing substance use and mental health needs within transitional housing and community settings, we aim to reduce the risks that contribute to homelessness and support individuals to maintain or regain stable housing. Services are designed to complement housing programs, outreach teams, and community partners.

our goals

  1. To partner with Indigenous health providers to coordinate and expand Indigenous traditional healing practices combined with Indigenous led medical services.
  2. To bring the Best of Both Worlds Together by advancing evidence based medical care for our communities in partnership with non-Indigenous medical services, governments, partners, and stakeholders.
